The Luck of Flight

Kim Ae-ran is loved by many readers and the literary establish- ment for her conventiontwisting wit and brilliant imagination. The author attempts to go beyond her usual literary scope in The Luck of Flight, which is her third anthology of short stories. In this collection, she draws from the group unconscious and melancholia of the youth of today in her serial stories of tragedy and demonstrates that it is happiness that they all desire. The fatigued characters, who are in their thirties, each articulates in their confessions their unhappiness. As if to show that wings are not given but are something that grow out of one’s body, the youths, who are inflicted with a malaise called “youth”, do not seem to manifest any sign of maturity; however, the author is saying that mere forbearance is a token of their growth.

Kim Ae-ran was born in Incheon in 1980 and grew up in Seosan. She won The 2002 Daesan Literary Awards College Students. She was also The recipient of the 2005 Hankookilbo Literary Award, The 2008 LEE Hyo-Seok Literary Award. The 4th KIM Yu Jung Literary Awards, 2013 YI Sang Literary Award. Her anthologies of short stories are Run,Abby!, Mouthwatering and The Luck of Flight, Summer Outside, My Palpitating Life is her full-length novel.

Kim Ae-ran김애란

Kim Ae-ran has received numerous literary awards in Korea. The French translation of Run, Dad! was awarded the Prix de l’inaperçu in France in 2014. As of 2024, her works have been translated and published in seventeen countries and more than thirty languages. Her works have been adapted into films, plays, pansori and dance plays.
