This novel by Jon Kyongnin was published in 2004. It is a retelling of the story of Hwang Jinyi, a real-life historical figure from the Joseon period, whose life has frequently been the subject of novels by authors such as Yi Tae Jun, Choi In-ho, and Hong Seokjung. In this version, the author emphasizes the difficult lives led by women in class-based Joseon society, as well as Hwang Jinyi’s desire and will not to be swayed by conventional rules and expectations.
