Description 작품 소개

GOD IS NOT ON HER SIDE is a masterful collection of five Korean horror stories that weaves supernatural elements with sharp social commentary, each tale anchored by a female protagonist who is considered an outsider (or at times an outcast) navigating different periods of Korean history. From a modern-day domestic violence survivor to a teenage North Korean defector, from a mysteriously widowed woman to a girl serving as a human sacrificial charm for a household against evil influences, to a persecuted Catholic girl in Joseon Korea, these characters emerge as powerful voices against oppression.

Like THE LEGEND OF LADY BYEOKSA (Byeoksa Assi-jeon) by Esther Park, which garnered international attention at book fairs for its blend of oriental fantasy and martial arts with strong female characterization, Kim Yi-Sak’s collection draws deeply from Korean cultural elements while addressing universal themes, reimagining Korean historical and supernatural narratives through a feminist lens.

Kim Yi-Sak crafts her narratives with subtle precision, allowing details to unfold gradually rather than presenting immediate exposition. This technique creates a rising sense of dread as the supernatural elements become increasingly personal, intertwining with the protagonists’ own past experiences. The horror in these stories stems not from merely ghostly or paranormal encounters, but from how closely they mirror real-world traumas and injustices.

Drawing from Korean folklore, where ghosts are often the dead with unresolved injustice seeking to restore balance between good and evil, Kim subverts traditional supernatural horror tropes. Her stories reveal a world where supernatural beings serve as allies to the marginalized, while humans emerge as the true perpetrators of evil. Each protagonist refuses to accept her predetermined fate, instead choosing to confront her destiny head-on, maintaining her humanity even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Through the lens of supernatural fantasy and horror, Kim gives voice to those who have been silenced throughout history, particularly women. This collection will appeal to fans of mystery TV shows, such as The Twilight Zone, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, and MGM+’s FROM, as well as urban legend enthusiasts, and readers who appreciate horror that delves deeper than surface-level scares to examine the human condition and social injustice.
