A Story about public health, safety, control, and the questions left to us after the pandemic.

After the COVID pandemic, the people decide to build a system that will prepare for another breakout of infectious disease. As a part of worldwide effort, the World Center for Disease Control & Prevention is established, and to detect any sign of possible infection, common use of antipyretic is banned and fever detecting drones fly above the sky. In this world, anyone with a fever should report to the hospital and prove that they are not a carrier of contagious disease before they can receive medication. Of course, if you don’t have any fatal infection, there is nothing to worry about. The world becomes safer through these preliminary actions.

But is it really so? Confirmed case 247 is caught contacting people without a mask and taking illegally manufactured antipyretics. As a super-carrier and the last host of mankind, confirmed case 247 is quarantined to the farthest place human can go, outer space, and faces death. People pour out different opinions about Confirmed case 247. Some say his selfish acts led to death of mankind, some say it was not right to send him off to space. Some tries to find a reason from his childhood which led to his doom, and some deifies 247 saying that the last Morse code he sent before death was “Love each other.”

Who really was confirmed case 247? His name is Kim Hong-seop, and this is a record of him.

Kim Hee-sun김희선

She graduated from Kangwon National University with a degree in pharmacy and completed a master's program in Korean literature at Dongguk University. In 2011, her short story “The Birth of Education” won the [Writer's World] Newcomer Award.
