Description 작품 소개
Heim is a young woman from a town called Yeonhyang, where she lives with her family: her mother, a beautiful rising actress; her father, a devoted if plain husband; and her grandfather, an eccentric man who, after getting struck by lightning, proclaims himself the God of the Universe and spends his days preaching Universism, the religion he founded. Heim works at the Yeonhyang Train Station snack store with her childhood friend Sungki. There, she develops feelings for Jiwan, a train station employee who buys one pack of White Heim hazelnut wafers from her every day. They start going on dates after work and soon fall in love. Then one day, Heim catches him staring at a young lady at the town square. She sees them walk away together and begins to doubt if what she and Jiwan have is real.
Meanwhile, in another city entirely, Mooyoung is living through a hell of her own. She is repeatedly raped and sexually abused by Heetae, a young man her father had taken in. She runs away from home after learning that she’s pregnant, gives birth to a daughter named Minah, and works different jobs in different cities until Heetae finds her again. He offers to take them in and put Minah through school, and upon promising that he will be a good father and husband, Mooyoung and Minah move in with him. One day, Minah finds out that Heetae had kidnapped and raped her best friend, whom he had offered to drive home from her academy. Unable to control her anger, Minah hits Heetae on the head with a wooden chopping board so hard that it partially paralyses him. Heetae threatens to report Minah to the police if either Mooyoung or Minah try anything funny, so Mooyoung decides to stay with him to protect her daughter. They move to Yeonhyang and stay in the room on the first floor of the restaurant where Mooyoung works. The restaurant owner stays on the second floor with her son, who just so happens to be Jiwan.
Alternating between Heim’s and Mooyoung’s perspectives, the novel impressively shifts tone with each chapter. Mooyoung’s perspective feels heavy and bleak, while Heim’s feels light and, at times, heart-fluttering. Excellently balancing two perspectives and two different timelines, Kang crafts a rollercoaster of a read from start to finish.
The novel centres on women, love, friendship, family, trauma, courage, and growth. The story follows two very different women navigating love – romantic, platonic, and familial. One overthinks and runs away from the problem, and the other is too scared to run away, but both become strong, independent women who outgrow jealousy and fear.
