After losing her job, Wolha decides to take the civil service exam as a last resort. To her surprise, she passes against heavy odds and is assigned to a small neighborhood office right next door to her home. At first, the job seems like an ordinary government position. But Wolha soon discovers that this office has a secret role: it deals with ghosts.
In the past, Korean local officials were believed to listen not only to the living but also to the dead, and this office continues that tradition. Behind the everyday paperwork, Wolha and her coworkers in the Exorcism Division handle strange cases caused by restless spirits. Instead of holy relics or religious rituals, Wolha uses her unusual talents in mathematics and computer programming to face supernatural problems. As she meets different ghosts, she begins to learn their stories. Some are dangerous, but many are simply trying to be heard after dying unfairly. Through these encounters, Wolha slowly grows into a capable exorcist. At the center of the office is the district chief, a powerful spiritual figure often compared to a great shaman. As they work together to solve supernatural cases, a romance begins to grow between him and Wolha.
Mixing office comedy and supernatural adventure, the series explored the idea of modern spirit hunters long before K-pop Demon Hunters. Alongside its ghost cases, it features a romance between Wolha and the district chief, as well as quirky early-2000s nostalgia. Drawing on the author’s own experience as a civil servant, the novel vividly captures the atmosphere of everyday life inside a local government office.
The complete seven-volume series was fully revised and republished as a three-volume series in 2023.
