Description 작품 소개

2001년 제4회 「창작과비평」 신인소설상에 '야경'이 당선되면서 작품활동을 시작한 표명희의 첫 소설집이다. 한국 사회 여성들의 문제를 독특한 리얼리즘으로 형상화한 여덟 편의 소설을 수록했다. 세련되고 안정된 문체, 머뭇거리는 듯하면서도 엉뚱하고 당당한 여성 캐릭터들은 표명희 소설이 가진 독특한 매력.

죽은 남편의 정부로 의심되는 여자를 찾아가는 주부('죽령터널, 지나다'), 가부장적 질서에 숨막혀하며 시어머니가 애지중지하는 애완견에게 씰리카겔을 먹이는 위악적인 며느리('씰리카겔') 등이 소설집의 여성 주인공들은 점점 더 이기적이 됨으로써 자신을 현시하고자 한다. 동시에 우리 사회가 하류층 여성들을 권위적으로 지배하는 메커니즘을 간접적으로 보여준다.

표제작 '3번 출구'는 한 직장 여성의 위태로운 삶을 그려낸다. 외모도 학벌도 별볼일없는 디자이너 '나'. '나'는 전문대 출신임에도 불구하고 직장에서 수석 디자이너로 인정받는다. 그런데 사랑 때문에 박실장에게 자신의 아이디어를 빼앗기고, 결국 사랑도 잃게 된다. 회사를 그만둔 '나'는 퇴직금 전부를 성형수술에 쓰면서 점차 정신착란에 빠져든다.

Pyo Myoung-hee made her literary debut when she won the Changbi Prize for New Figures in Literature in 2001 with her short story, “Nocturnal Scenery.” She is the author of the short story collections Exit No.3 and Housemate, and the novels, Off Road Diary and The Gold Rush.
