장르 간의 경계를 해체하는 장편소설로 주목받는 소설가 오현종의 여섯번째 장편소설 『자객의 칼날은』이 문학동네 플레이 시리즈 중 ‘역사’ 장르로 개정 출간되었다. 장르에 구애 받지 않고 흥미로운 이야기들을 낱낱이 흡수하여 문학장 안으로 끌어들이는 오현종은 화살과 표창이 날고, 검광이 번득이는 무협 서사에 주목한 바 있다. 사마천의 『사기』에 수록된 「자객열전」 속 인물 ‘섭정’에 매료된 오현종은 이 인물을 중심으로 이야기 줄기를 뻗어나간 끝에 2015년 ‘옛날 옛적에 자객의 칼날은’이라는 제목의 거대하고 촘촘한 이야기의 미궁을 지어 보였다.
그후 출간 10년 만에 제목을 바꾸어 재출간되는 이 장편소설은 ‘K-컬처’의 위상이 날로 높아가는 이때 입에서 입으로 전해내려오는 우리 옛이야기를 다시 읽는 재미를 새삼 일깨워준다. 책 속의 책, 그 안팎을 넘나들며 때로는 무공으로, 때로는 서사의 힘으로 활보하는 인물들의 열띤 에너지가 전해져온다. 이 인물들의 동력은 복수심 한 가지이다. 한 인간의 마음속에서 악惡이 발원한 이래, 복수가 복수를 낳으며 끝없이 이어지게 된 이 뜨겁고도 처연한 이야기의 한가운데로 초대한다.

Oh Hyun-jong오현종

Oh Hyun-jong made (b.1973) her literary debut in 1999 when her short story “Addiction” won the New Writer’s Award after appearing in the monthly magazine Literature and Thought. Her major works include the short story collection Seiren, and the novels The Sacred Materialists and Sweet, Cold.
