한 소녀의 납치를 둘러싼 섬뜩하면서도 거대한 진실!

이재찬의 소설 『안젤라 신드롬』. <인간극장>에서 어려운 생활에도 그 누구보다 밝은 모습을 유지하는 모습에 국민의 가슴을 따뜻하게 만들었던 그 돼지소녀 혜실이 실종된 것이다. 화제가 되었던 만큼 온 국민과 언론의 관심을 받으며 조사가 진행됐지만 시신도 단서도 발견되지 않은 채 시간만 흘렀고, 결국 사람들의 관심에서 멀어져갔다. 그즈음 혜실의 아빠 영복 앞에 납치범이 나타나 혜실을 보여주었고, 아무에게도 말하지 않고 조용히 기다리면 다시 혜실을 보여주겠다고 하며 사라졌다.

그러나 영복은 철물점 주인 공형순에게 이 사실을 말하게 되고, 소문이 퍼지며 신문에도 짧게 기사가 나오게 됐다. 하지만 이미 사람들의 머릿속에서 잊힌 돼지소녀 실종사건에 어느 누구도 관심을 보이지 않았다. 오로지 영복 홀로 혜실이 살아 있다며 딸을 찾기 위해 고군분투하지만 오히려 언론은 그 모습을 보고 죽은 자식을 부모가 보았다고 착각하는 정신병인 ‘안젤라 신드롬’이라고 진단했다. 시간이 흘러, 쓰러져 정신을 잃었던 돼지소녀 엄마인 은심이 정신을 차리고 동생 현심을 통해서 본격적으로 혜실을 찾아 나서는데…….
