No Soomin is a South Korean novelist born in Busan. She made her debut through the Korea Joongang Daily in 1979 with the novel Godokan pasukkun (고독한 파수꾼 The Lonely Guard). Her novels Bulbada (불바다 A Sea of Flames), Wiheomhan yeonga (위험한 연가 A Dangerous Ballad), and Godokan pasukkun have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, respectively. Her 1994 novel Bulbada which predicted the death of Kim Il-sung, in particular, sold 140,000 copies in 20 days, with a Japanese translation being rushed to press by Kobunsha. No has been awarded the Kyung Hee Literature Prize, the Hankyoreh Literary Award, and the Korean Literary Fiction prize. Bulbada is known as the recipient of the first Hankyoreh Literary Award. Hankyoreh Munhak is a literary journal founded in 1993, with the first Hankyoreh Literary Award being established the following year.
