Author Bio 작가 소개

“It was not an outright lie, though to heighten the tension, I had no choice but to exaggerate and let slip lies here and there. However, as I retold the story again and again, those exaggerations and lies began to harden into truth before I realized it.” (Yahweui Bam [The Night of Yahweh]. Hongsungsa, 2014)

Cho Sung-ki is a novelist who explores the relationship between God and humanity through literature.

1. Life

Cho Sung-ki was born in Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province in 1951. He studied law at Seoul National University and completed his graduate studies at The Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary. He made his literary debut in 1971 after winning the Dong-A Ilbo New Year’s Literary Contest with his short story “Manhwagyeong” (Kaleidoscope”). After a long period of conflict between preparation for the bar, literature, and religion, he resumed active writing in 1985 with the publication of Rahateu Haherep (Lahat Haḥereb), which explores the relationship between human salvation. After entering university, he began studying the Bible and worked as a Christian missionary, an experience that grounded his literary works in Christian community life. He also served as a professor of creative writing at Soongsil University. He is currently engaged in translating and reinterpreting Eastern classics alongside writing fiction and works on religion.

2. Writing

Cho believed literature was “a middle ground between God and humanity.” In his novel Yahweui Bam (The Night of Yahweh), drawn from his early experiences as a missionary, he portrays the development of a missionary organization consumed by elitism and gradually descending into fanaticism. Through this, he moves beyond the religious institution that suppresses individual consciousness and explores an earlier form of Christianity, prior to its collectivization. His autobiographical novel Seulpeun Deusi Jogeum Ppareuge (A Little Faster, as Though Sad) marked a turning point, after which he began producing fiction on a range of subjects, moving away from a religious perspective. Illyeonui Kkum, Samgungnyusa (Ilyeon’s Dream, Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) clearly indicates that his fictional world expanded toward the reinterpretation of Eastern classics.
