Description

ITTA Publishing

Translating the Unfamiliar Voices of the World, Connecting Korean Poetry to the Globe

ITTA Publishing (์ป๋‹ค) is an independent publishing house specializing in the humanities and literature, founded in the spring of 2015 by a group of young publishers united by a single conviction: to bring into the world books that truly deserve to exist. The name "์ป๋‹ค" carries a dual resonance—it is an archaic Korean word meaning "to be good," and it simultaneously evokes the modern verb ์ž‡๋‹ค ("to connect"). True to its name, itta has dedicated itself to building crossroads of thought that transcend the boundaries of time, space, and language.

1. Unearthing Texts Across Borders: The Gwolho Series and the Foreign Poetry Project

ITTA's inaugural Gwolho (Parenthesis) series established the press's distinctive identity by excavating overseas classics and philosophical works that had never been properly introduced to Korean readers. Building on this foundation, the press launched its foreign poetry initiative—most notably through the itta Poets' Selection—to bring unfamiliar verse from abroad into the Korean literary landscape. These projects did more than simply import foreign literature; they opened up uncanny and luminous linguistic spaces for readers accustomed to a more homogeneous literary voice, and in doing so became a significant literary experiment that uncovered and expanded the latent possibilities of the Korean language itself.

2. Opening a Public Forum for Knowledge: Gyocha, a Humanities Book-Review Journal

Unwilling to confine itself to translation publishing alone, ITTA launched Gyocha (Intersection) in 2021, a humanities book-review journal designed to bridge the gap between academia and the general public. Through rigorously composed reviews that rival scholarly articles in depth and precision, Gyocha amplifies the voices of Korea's leading researchers, connecting them with a broader readership and fostering a robust ecosystem for humanistic discourse in Korean intellectual life.

3. Korean Literature Meets the World: The Korean Poetry Export Project

ITTA has now moved beyond bringing the world's literature into Korea; it stands at the forefront of introducing Korean literature to the world. Working in close partnership with its in-house literary agency, Nasun, the press is actively curating, translating, and presenting outstanding Korean poetry—including the work of poet Yoo Heekyung—to international markets. By connecting the literary assets of a country where poetry is created and consumed with unparalleled dynamism to readers across the globe, itta is charting new territory for Korean literature on the world stage.

In sum, itta is a publisher that embodies the fullest sense of its name—connecting. It links forgotten foreign classics and unfamiliar verse to Korean readers, intersects the languages of scholars and the public, and, looking outward, carries Korea's singular poetic voice to the wider world.
