Human And Nonhuman scrap
September 7, 2026
Living in the twenty-first century means living face to face with artificial intelligence, the product of an unprecedented leap in scientific technology. It also means living with an acute awareness of the fragility of the environment and the role of the human species among many other nonhuman species on earth. Our current concerns with and for the nonhuman, however, are not new. Indeed, we could say that nonhumans have never been far from our minds. Already one hundred years ago, science fiction writers were struggling with the ethical dilemmas they foresaw in future societies, and many of the stories they imagined involved robots, animals, and plants. Here are two Korean writers whose work grows out of an abiding interest in the complex relationship between the human and nonhuman: Bae Myung-hoon, whose satirical science fiction depicts the imbrication of humans with technology, and Kim Mella, who writes from the engaging viewpoint of insects, objects, and other nonhumans.
